Should professional sports teams do more to honor military service members?

Las Vegas Raiders fans can now help decide who wins the NFL's Salute to Service Award, with the team's nominee, defensive tackle Adam Butler, on the ballot. Voting runs through Nov. 30 at NFL.com/SaluteFanVote, one vote per day.

Why it matters

The award honors players who give back to the military community, and the Raiders' nomination puts a local face on that work for valley residents who follow the team. Fan voting narrows the field to three finalists, so every daily vote counts toward which nominee advances.

The award is in its 16th year, and each of the league's 32 teams names one nominee, with fans allowed one vote per day through Nov. 30. Butler's father served 20 years in the Air Force and retired as a chief master sergeant, and the extraction does not report current vote totals.

Beyond the Strip

Butler's nomination places a valley player inside the 16-year-old Salute to Service Award, which every NFL team takes part in through its own nominee.
